Availability, not just proximity
A childcare centre or GP clinic being nearby doesn't mean a place is actually available to you — vacancy, opening hours, fee levels, and whether a practice is accepting new patients all determine real access, and none of these show up on a simple proximity map.
Childcare and early-childhood services
Long day care, kindergarten, family day care and outside-school-hours care each have their own vacancy patterns, fees and quality ratings. Starting Blocks is the national government service for comparing early-childhood services, including quality ratings, fees and vacancies — a more reliable check than assuming a centre near a shortlisted property has space. Since the "3 Day Guarantee" took effect on 5 January 2026, every Child Care Subsidy-eligible family gets at least 3 days (72 hours per fortnight) of subsidised care regardless of parents' work or study hours — a real change to actual affordability and access, not just physical proximity. Healthcare access
GP availability (including whether local practices bulk bill and are accepting new patients), pharmacy, allied health, and proximity to a hospital or emergency department all matter differently depending on your household's actual needs — a young, healthy household and a household with ongoing health needs or ageing parents should weigh this very differently. In regional areas, ambulance travel time and the nearest emergency department become genuinely more significant considerations.
